Fines after begging
(N.Z. Press Association} WANGANUI, Nov. 13. Begging $lO from a woman in order to bet on last week’s Melbourne Cup cost a 24-year-old former salesman $220 and 18 months probation today. Robert Dragicevic, who was said to have cried as he told the woman he wanted money to visit his father, injured in an accident in Palmerston North, appeared for sentence on one charge of obtaining the money by false pretence and another of attempted false pretence. Mr J. C. K. Fabian, S.M., imposed $lOO fines, with $5 costs, on each charge and ordered restitution of $lO, which counsel (Mr J. R. L. Tripe) said had already been paid to the woman. Detective Sergeant T. N. M. Nalder said that one of the cup tickets bought with the $lO had returned an $8.75 dividend. The Magistrate: There’s only one place that should go. Sergeant Nalder: The Government Consolidated Account, sir? The Magistrate: I’d prefer to see it go to the probation officer to pay off the first instalment of the fine.
