Northern pacers prove too good in main race

The visiting Waikato pacers, Young Quinn and Young Cardigan, beat their southern rivals in the Allan Matson Stakes last evening at Addington Raceway. Young Quinn’s win was well deserved as he finished third in the New Zealand Cup and fourth in the free-for-all last week.

Young Quinn isi trained at Cambridge by C. S. Hunter, who drove him to win. Hunter got 1 him away splendidly and■ had him beautifully positioned on the outside of the third line for most of the way.

Hi Foyle set a hot pace! early, but was passed by Ryal I with 1800 m left. Hi Foyle I tried to get the lead again with 1000 m left and he raced on terms with Ryal to, the straight. Young Cardigan was the first to challenge Hi Foyle; when Ryal dropped away, but Young Quinn passed them inside the last 100 m and came; on to win decisively by two' lengths in the course record; time of 3:22 for the 2600 m. j Young Cardigan held: second by a nose from Rob-i alan, which was hampered! slightly near the home turn. He put in a great run for his placing. Hi Foyle held on gamely* for fourth half a neck from! Robalan, with a length to Manawaru and two lengths to ' Royal Ascot, which was badly[ checked by the galloping Fab at the start. The third favourite, Vanadium, was slow away and was never a danger. TOUGH NIGHT The connections of Hi Foyle caused a surprise when they startei the five-year-old in consecutive races last evening. He had a hard run when fourth in the Allan Matson Handicap and then contested the Le Lievre Handicap, in which he started from 40 metres and finished fifth.

i Hi Foyle quickly made up i his handicap and improved ifour and five wide from the ; 1200 m mark. He was steadied [in the back straight and came again near the end, finishing I close to Dwayne, Gay Rose, : Why Bill and Young Trouble, i Dwayne gave M. Holmes [his third win for the night. He was about five places 'back on the inside for most [of the way then came ! strongly wide out on the

track to win by a short: length. Gay Rose was not disgraced as she broke at the start. Easton Light won the N.Z. Trotting Free-for-all in clear-cut style to give North Island stables the winning T.A.B. double. B. Running gave Easton Light a perfect run, one off the fence, and he took charge early in the run home. He won by a length and a half in the track-

record time of 3:25 for the 2600 m. Bachelor Tom shaded the favourite, Philemon, for second. Both were slow away, with Bachelor Tom at the rear when the field settled down. Philemon, too, was slow early and put in a strong run from the 400 metres. Honest John, close up all the way, was a fair fourth ahead of the pacemaker, Bambi.
