OIL WATCH

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 13. The Cabinet Economic Committee was watching the oil situation, the Deputy Prime Minister (Mr Watt) said today. The Cabinet had not discussed the matter at its weekly meeting yesterday, and the Government was hopeful that New Zealand would not be adversely affected by the situation overseas. Asked what action might be considered, Mr Watt said: “I would not like to make a firm statement at

present. But we’re looking at this daily.” Later Mr Watt said the growing use of oil for electricity generation in New Zealand might come under review as a result of recent events in the Middle East. New Zealand might do better to use resources closer at hand. “I personally don’t think that you get the greatest value out of your natural gas by burning it to produce electricity, but I can’t see any other immediate use for it and we need electricity very badly.”
