Left-wing guerrillas assaulted a Chilean Army garrison yesterday, but were repelled, ’suffering losses of. seven dead and two captured, the President of the Military Government (General Augusto Pinochet) reports. The guerrillas tried, but! failed, to seize the ex-] plosives store in an attack, just before dawn, on the! garrison of the Tucapel] Regiment, in the city of Te-| mico, 360 miles south of Santiago. About 20 terrorists took; part in the attack, but the garrison was undamaged. General Pinochet made his disclosure while speaking at the Santiago Military Acade-! my just before a Roman Catholic Mass in memory of the 40 soldiers who died when the armed forces overthrew the Government of the late Marxist President,! Dr Salvador Allende, on September 11. The junta reported last week that resistance activity! was declining: fewer clandestine arms caches were coming to light, and the i armed forces had no difficulty controlling the| country, it said. As a result; the curfew imposed on the] capital since the coup d’etat! was relaxed slightly, but! Santiago, and other cities, ' remain under an all-night; curfew.
