Same food, less work

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 12. Workmen have to work fewer hours to earn enough money for a grocery basket than at any time since 1960, according to a table prepared for the Minister of Trade and Industry (Mr Freer) and released today. It shows that a journeyman carpenter had to work 5.97 hours in October this year to buy a 23-item grocery basket costing $10.53. This cost compared with $6.73 in October, 1960, $7 21 in October, 1966, and $10.37 in December last year. But the number of hours worked was 10.09 in 1960, 8.73 in 1966 and 6.70 last December. Figures for a labourer show that he was to work 7.50 hours for the same basket. In 1960, he had to work 12.12 hours, in 1966 10.55 hours, and last December 8.13 hours.
