Try saves France

(N. Z.P. A. -Reuter— Copyright) VALENCE (France).

A disputed try four minutes from the end saved France from a humiliating home defeat by Rumania in their Rugby union international in Valence.

The French, trailing 3-6, launched a desperate attack which ended with Bertranne diving over the line clutching the ball. He appeared to twist on to his back as he landed, and the try was strongly disputed by the Rumanians.

But the referee ruled against them and France was left with a slender, 7-6 victory. The French missed four easy penalties in the first half, and constantly fumbled their passes, but took the lead against the run of play with a dropped goal by Romeu. The Rumanians levelled five minutes after half time by a penalty goal by Durbac, who then put them in front by kicking another in the fifty-seventh minute.
