Games trip as prize
One Australian sportsman who will be attending the Commonwealth Games might well consider his trip to Christchurch something of a consolation prize — rather than a bonus for his ability.
J. Mayes, the scrum-half in the Manly-Warringah team which won the Sydney Rugby league championship last month, was judged to be the outstanding player in the 22 premiership rounds in Sydney by the “Rugby League Week” magazine and won an 18-day cruise for himself and his wife on board the liner Ocean Monarch. The Ocean Monarch will be berthed in Lyttelton during the Commonwealth Games.
Mayes was considered by many observers to be unlucky to miss a place in the Australian Rugby league team at present in England. One of three players who shared the runner-up position in the magazine’s weekly ratings, T. Raudonikis ' (Western Suburbs, Sydney), was preferred, as ■ was D. K. Ward (now with Newcastle Western Sub- ■ urbs, but Mayes's predecessor with Mailly). •MISS SPORTSWORLD’ In Britain, six sports i girls have been selected as finalists .in a competition which has a trip to the Commonwealth Games as first prize, the N.Z.P.A. reported. Run by the "Sportsworld” magazine, the official journal of the British Olympic Association, the competition is to find a “Miss Sportsworld.” Judging — on sports ability and beauty — by the athlete David Bedford, the boxer John Conteh, and the , England women’s cricket captain, Rachel Heyhoe, will be on November 8. The finalists are Miss H. Woodhouse, an Olympic canoeist; the all-Ireland resident women’s high jump record-holder. Miss W. Phillips; Miss M. Russell (400 m runner); Miss S, Biggs, former British junior athlete of the year; Miss P. Harris, a trainee-teacher and sports all-rounder, and Miss S. Oldall, the Surrey pentathlon champion.
