(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 30. New Zealand’s net migration gain reached a record 23,270 in the year ended last July, mainly because of a heavy increase in British migrants since the tighter economic conditions in Britain.

The Statistics Department reported today that the latest gain follow’s net migration gains to population of 13,604 in the year to July, 1972, and 6428 the previous year.

Permanent and long-term migrants—those staying in New Zealand for a year or more—rose to 58,768 in the year to last July compared with 47,839 in the 1972 year and 40,676 in the previous year. The department said that the number of permanent and long-term arrivals — those intending to live in New Zealand for a year or more and New Zealanders returning home after a year or more overseas—exceeded permanent and long-term departures by 20,809. Overseas tourists arriving in New Zealand during the latest, year numbered 211,892, compared with 178,461 in the 1972 year. The complete review of (immigration policy promised by the Labour Government has been under way for some months and may be completed in January, although portions of it may take a little longer, says the Wellington reporter of “The Press.” Officers of the Immigration Department confirmed today that this is the first complete review to have been undertaken in their memory. It is assumed that when the investigation is completed further action will be taken to redefine policy in the light of the Government’s known views on aspects of immigration. The review is being done in sections, the first of which, relating to the admission of private overseas students, was published on October 2.
