Social workers
Sir, — As a woman of 81 ■ living alone, and desiring no ■ visits from social workers, I deeply resent Mrs Wales’s assertion that such an attitude is “pure cussedness.” She should beware, lest frustrated zeal betray her into officiousness. I admire social
| workers, and respect their good works; but old people are entitled to their reticences. When asked by my doctor if I would like a social worker to call, I replied truthfully “No, thanks. It would only worry me.” I have the telephone, kind relatives, and a few friends. I am without television, and seldom listen to radio, preferring to read. Perhaps I am more fortunate than most. — Yours, etc., R.R.M. Oct. 28, 1973.
