Civic Pride Week proclaimed
Civic Pride Week in Christchurch started officially at 11 a.m. yesterday when the Mayor (Mr N. G. Pickering), heralded by a costumed Town Crier, read a proclamation from the steps of the council chambers.
r _ As a crowd of Cathedra! ; Grammar School boys, coun- > cil staff, and Friday shoppers ' looked on, Mr Pickering ! urged all to support the campaign, and help keep Christ- ■ church “clean and beautiful.” ' The Town Crier for the !■ next week, Mr D. Clarke, of f the Elmwood and Riccarton ‘ Players, cried the proclama--1 tion through the main busi- ' ness areas of Christchurch 1 last evening — a process to - be repeated today at New ; Brighton, and through inner Christchurch during lunch--5 hours for the next week. ■ The proclamation praised ' the city’s great natural beauty which should be preserved. ! but which was threatened by the carelessness and thoughtlessness of a polluting and 1 littering few. It pledged the Citv Council’s support for the national anti-litter campaign 'and the Civic Pride Week. 1 Youth groups will tackle ; anti-litter projects throughout Christchurch and its suburbs today, with the help {of City Council trucks and {Council-supplied litter-bags. {They will clean up the beaches at Sumner and South New Brighton, the road verges around and in Hagley Park, and the Papanui, St Albans, Sydenham, and central business areas.
I There will be a “litter . chase” in New Brighton dur- , ing the afternoon, and clean--1 ups in Dyers Road, Cuthberts I Road, and Breezes Road, and in Bexley Road and Kibblewhite Street. Tentative plans include the ■ tidying of elderly persons’! gardens, and the cleaning of | various drains and creeks. The latter project will take place either late this month ; or early in November.
