End of a church
The 100-year-oid Anglican church at Ashley is due to be dismantled today, in spite of attempts by a group of local residents to save it. A spokesman for the residents (Mr J. J. Allison) said yesterday that everything possible had been done to preserve the church, but to no avail. The Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt Rev. W. A. Pyatt), to whom appeals have been made, said yesterday that the local people had known for a year that the church was to be sold.
The building had not been used for several years, and had been sold by tender to the highest bidder, he said.
