Fees at geriatric hospitals

Sir, —In reply to “Citizen”, who is questioning the 33 1/3 per cent rise in fees paid by patients in a private geriatric hospital. I work as a nurse in this hospital. Over the past 12 months my hourly rate of pay has increased by 33 1/3 per cent during the week and by 53 per cent at the week-end. We have 65 patients and over 80 staff. The staff enjoy the same meals as the patients—not only stew, but chicken, pork, fish, beef, and lamb. All but seven patients have their own rooms. With the ever-increas-ing cost of food, and rising wages, I would think that the rise in fees is regrettable but unavoidable. Perhaps one solution is to keep grandma at home with the family. Too many o. our old folk are put into geriatic homes when they could still be useful members in the community and part of the family unit, i—Yours, etc., R.N. ! October 11, 1973.
