Keeping the streets tidy
Sir. —Since Mr Pickering is so concerned about civic tidiness, I suggest he makes a start on his own street. Webb Street is one of the dirtiest streets I have seen. It appears to be seldom, if ever cleaned. Numerous dogs are allowed by their inconsiderate owners to roam the streets day and night, fouling the footpaths, overturning rubbish bins and ripping open rubbish bags that are put out at night for early morning collection by the garbage - collecting truck.— Ynnrs ptr WEBB STREET RESIDENT. October 5, 1973. [The City Engineer (Mr P. G. Scoular) replies: “It is an offence for dog owners to allow their dogs to roam at large on the streets and if specific complaints are referred to the city health department immediate action will be taken. Areas where dogs are known to be a problem are patrolled as a matter of routine. The Webb Street side channels were swept on August 2 and 24, and late in September with other streets in the neighbourhood. At present. because of shortage of staff, two men are sweeping three rounds. The city bylaws require refuse to be put out on the day of collection.”]
