SWIMMING FEES UP
Th* Canterbury Swimming Centre's affiliation fee for the coming season was increased by esc to $2 at the annual meeting of the centre last evening. The centre accounts for the year, presented at the meeting, showed a deficit of $1690. The New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association Increased its affiliation fee at its annual meeting by 50c last month. However, this will not have to be paid this season. It was disturbing to see the centre had a deficit last year, said Mr R Claxton, but it was even more alarming to see an 11 per cent drop in membership of the centre. He said that a large part of the money was spent on travel for competitors, but young swimmers who were not so interested in competition had to be catered [ for as well. I Mr S. (St Albansi was concerned that the national open championships cost the centre $BOO last year, while the national winter championships cost more than $9OO. Because there was only one covered pool in Christchurch, members of one club benefited largely from this money. His club had no objection to the rise in fees if the distribution of money was more equitable. Mr J. Wakefield said his club. Wharenui, spent more than $4OOO on travel last year, and that for clubs and the centre to retain swimmers, they bad to be offered incentives. “If you carry j on budgeting for a deficit the ! centre will not be able to remain in existence,” he said.
