S.I. open table tennis

Canterbury players nearly had a clean sweep of titles in the South Island open table tennis championships in Blenheim at the week-end. They won the men's singles, women’s singles, women’s doubles, mixed doubles, and veterans’ titles against strong opposition from the North Island. Among the string of upsets were the defeat of the New Zealand No. 4 and No. 5 ranked players, R. Lee (Auckland) and J. Morris (Northland) by W. Adamson and M. Burrowes of Canterbury respectively, in the semi-finals of the open men’s singles. Miss J. Morris added to her list of open titles by defeating a fellowCantabrian, the New Zealand No. 6 woman, Miss B. Taylor, in the final of the women’s singles. Early upsets were the defeats of the fifth seed, A. Lust (Wellington) by H. Holt (Canterbury) in a tense, fiveset, third-round match, and the third seed, J. Armstrong, by Adamson in the quarter-finals. Miss D. Looms (Marlborough), ranked fourth in the New Zealand juniors, beat Miss P. Marks, the third seed, in a quarter-final. The match between Lee and Adamson was a contrast of speed and spin, with both players trying to prevent their opponent from looping. Adamson won, 21-16, 7-21, 24-22, 22-20. Lee, the second seed, was runner-up to G. Murphy (Hamilton) in the recent North Island open. In the other semi-final Burrowes matched Morris point for point in a fastmoving, counter-hitting, fourset victory, 21-16, 21-12, 14-21, 21-16.

MEN’S FINAL In the final Burrowes stood close in to the table and dominated play. He beat Adamson. 21-12. 21-14. 21-15. In the women’s final Miss Morris was more settled than Miss Tavlor and won, 21-17, 21-19, 21-16. Results:—
