A former New Zealand horse. Royal Derby, had a hand in making last Saturday at Hollywood Park a great occasion for the Californian trainer C. Whittingham. Whittingham telephoned Mr E. L. Haydon, of Auckland, Royal Derby’s former owner, on Tuesday night to tell him the horse had won “a pretty good race” at Hollywood Park on Saturday the day on which Whittingham’s three runners finished first, second and third in the Hollywood Gold Cup. This latest race was Royal Derby’s ninth in America and his record is three firsts, three seconds, two thirds and a fourth.
A four-year-old by northern hemisphere time, Royal Derby raced well in New Zealand last season and has evidently trained on. Whittingham considers, too, that another year or so might get him to even better form. Royal Derby was passed in at $BOOO at the Trentham yearling sales, raced by Mr and Mrs A. E. Preston of Wellington for the first 10 or his 12 two-year-old starts, then bought by Mr Haydon. Mr Haydon then sold the horse to the actress, Greer Garson, and her husband.
