SITUATION AT 8 P.M. A weakening ridge of high pressure extends from the Chathams to Gisborne, and is moving slowly north-east. A strong, disturbed west to north-west airstream flows across the Tasman on to New Zealand. FORECASTS:

MARLBOROUGH.—North-westerlies, strong to gale force about the Sounds and fresh elsewhere; rain easing to scattered showers, with some decrease in wind; moderate or mild temperatures. NELSON.—Westerly winds, freshening at times; fair, apart from showers in the west; moderate temperatures. BULLER AND WESTLAND.—Northerly winds, fresh at times; periods of rain; moderate temperatures. CANTERBURY AND KAIKOURA COAST. —North-westerlies, strong in inland valleys and spreading at times to the coast; rain about the Alps, mainly cloudy elsewhere, with scattered light showers; cooler. OUTLOOK.—CoId, showery south-westerlies.
