Rawhiti causes upset in women’s hockey

Three goals by Rawhiti in quick succession helped it beat the competition leader, Harewood, in the Christchurch senior women’s hockey competition on Saturday.

In other matches, Digbys,, Burnside, and Carlton all had j wins. The competition now stands at a most interesting stage, five teams being within a point and a half of one another. Results were: Rawhiti 3, Harewood 1. Digby’s 3, University 2. Burnside 2, Cranmer 1. Carlton 3, Aranui 1. Points are: Harewood 7, Carlton sj, Aranui, Digby’s and Rawhiti University 4, Burnside 3|, Cranmer 2|. SURPRISE WIN From the opening bully. R.: Carroll netted for Rawhiti after her forward line had moved through Harewood’s defence. Almost immediately after, C. Butts scored a second goal with a fine shot; and seven minutes later, a third goal came from Butts, who had plenty of time to angle her shot into a corner of the net. With its defence torn apart. Harewood could find no answer to the challenge, and it was close to the final whisUe before its centre-forward, L. Schultz, scored from a penalty. Combination was lacking among the Harewood forwards, and the half-line never really recovered from Rawhiti’s initial onslaught. L. Aldridge toiled hard at inside right, but only had support from her wing, J. Duncan. Rawhiti’s defence was led by the right-back, J. Wright, who played an exceptional game. C. Berry, at left-half, trapped and cleared well. Umpires: Miss N. Beale and K. Chapman. OUT OF FORM In a milder upset, Digby’s beat an out-of-form University team. University applied fairly constant pressure on Digby’s defence in the opening stages, but was kept at bay. even through several penalties. Digby’s scored first, from one of its few penalties. University equalised soon after, through S. Borren. Very close to half-time. Digby’s regained the lead, through a goal by M. Ogiers—and early in the second half, M. Darch again scored for Digby’s.

Both teams lowered their standard of play in the second half, but after many attempts, L. Patterson finally scored for University.

Umpires: Mrs M. McGregor and Miss B. Durbott. LOST OPPORTUNITIES

Burnside made the most of its drive in the circle when on attack. Many times, Cranmer could have scored had opportuni-

ties been seized, but only S. Pryor seemed willing to grasp chances.

Burnside scored first through A. Alleway. Cranmer equalised on half-time when S. Pryor moved in quickly on Bumside’s goal-keeper. AUeway scored Burnside’s winning goal in a dull second half, both teams having several chances on attack but making little use of them. Burnside’s forwards looked revived with the restoration of the former inside trio of Alleway, J. Phillips, and J. Allen. U. Pipe acquitted herself well at leftback. For Cranmer the centre-half, S. Stewart, directed much of Tier team’s attacks, and the goalkeeper, J. Johnson, coped well with many of Burnside’s hard shots. Umpires: Mrs M. McGregor and J. Wilson. CARLTON DOMINANT Aranui held a one-goal lead well into the second half after E. Jordan had scored, but Carlton scored three goals in the latter part of the second half, all bv the inside-left. A. Smith. Carlton had been directing its play down the right flank and across to the left for Smith to finish the movements, but it was well into the match before this tactic succeeded. Umpires: Miss N. Beale and K. Chapman.
