Hockey loss avenged

High School O'd Boys, I i beaten by Hagley Old Boys in I ! the senior preliminary hocksy ! competition, avenged its defeat | on Saturday in the second round of matches in the Trans Tours championship. Old Boss and University are now the only unbeaten teams in the champir.aship. University was unconvincing in, beating Harewood-Burnside 3-0,! but it is hard to imagine its, play staying at this standard formore than a week. Hagley Old Boys and High School Old Boys combined in a very scrappy game, which was - not expected from two teams of such good quality. Points in the Trans Tours;

Results and scorers were:— University 3 (C. Maister, B.

[ J. Maister, T. Borren), Hare-wood-Burnside 0. I High School Old Boys 1 (R. I Bailey), Hagley Old Boys 0. Linwood Old Boys 2 (B. Bhana, D. Small), Redcliffs 0. LACK-LUSTRE GAME Hagley missed three good scoring opportunities in the first half i against High School Old Boys, and this proved fatal because I mid-way through the second half I Old Boys scored from one of its infrequent attacks, and stubborn defence for the remainder of the game kept Hagley at bay. Although both teams are in the top three in the senior competition, their standard of play on Saturday- was equivalent to. that of some of the teams in the! senior B competition. Both teams tried to play attacking hockey but were frustrated

by a slippery and holding ground, and a large number of obstructions. W. A. Thomson. I. Jackson and J. Bailey dribbled incisively for Hagley but could not find the net in spite of numerous chances. W. B. Wright and W. Griffin kept the forwards well supplied with ball, and P. F. Clark. P. Cox and P. Wayman formed an effective rearguard. A. J. Patterson at centre-half tackled deftly, although he was often astray with his passes, and G. Marshall and S. Pamcovered well against the elusive Hagley forwards. Umpires: Messrs D. Lloyd and R. Chant. TENTATIVE UNIVERSITY The Wigram air display, seen at Ham from a distance, held more interest than the match between University and Hare-wood-Burnside. University was tentative in its approach and subsequently its attack was only a shadow of that seen in previous games this season. Harewood, although solid in defence, should not have held the University forwards the wav it did, but the students’ attacks were very infreqent and without

much of the customary skilful dribbling and passing. [ A. Chesney, at centre-half for [Harewood, was very active hari rassing the dangerous University ! inside forwards and intercepting ! numerous passes. He received ■ good support from R. Pettet and 'the full-backs. At half-time University held a [l-0 lead, although it had the ball I in the net three other times only ! to have the goals disallowed. In I the second half is play became [more ragged and the link between forwards and halves suffered. B. J. Maister and A. Barren were always seeking opportunities for University, and on the left side. N. Coster at lefti half and E. Holstein at left-back tied up L. Brown and W. SeeSbeck. the Harewood right flank [ attack. [ Umpires: B. Newton and K.

■ McEwen. CONVINCING WIN I Superior trapping by Linwood! Old Boys gave it a considerable] advantage over Redcliffs. and I this factor was a major one in! : its win. Linwood received an early boost when it was awarded a penalty stroke in the first five! minutes which B. Bhana con-! verted. Linwood continued to press Redcliffs although there! was no further score at halftime. B. Spears was an exception in ;the Redcliffs side. He trapped land dribbled well but his task; iwas too great against a very: solid Linwood defence led by P. I and B. Bhana and B. Trethewcy. I The New Zealand representative, A. Ineson, was out of form and was unable to overcome poor trapping. K. Barr, in the Redcliffs goal, was solid and helped; halt several Linwood attacks. | D. Small was at his best, with several telling runs down the I right-flank, and he was supported: by the other Linwod forwards,! who were constantly looking for gaps in the Redcliffs defence. Umpires: Messrs E. Ambler and K. Gray.
