Rail freight increases

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 15. There had been a significant increase in the tonnage of goods carried by the Railways Department in the first four months of 1973, said the Minister of Railways (Mr McGuigan) today. Replying to a question from Mr I. J. Brooks (Lab., Marlborough), he said that 5,087,584 tons had been carried during the period, an increase of 539,980 tons on the corresponding period of last year. This compared with a decline of 21,495 tons between the first four months of 1971 and 1972.
