DAVIS UNLUCKY

In spite of a workmanlike performance in the national Rugby trials on Wednesday, the 29-year-old Canterbury and Suburbs half-back, L. J. Davis (pictured), seems unlikely to achieve selection for the All Blacks this season. His southern rival, G. L. Colling (Otago), will be the haif-back when the South Island meets the North at Whangarei today. Davis has been named as reserve. The Canterbury player has been the “bridesmaid” of New Zealand Rugby for many years. He has been an All Black reserve 12 times without actually getting on the field. But over the years he has given tremendous service to Canterbury. He has now represented his province 112 times and also has four South Island “caps” to his credit. His relegation to the reserves for today’s interisland match indicates that he is, at best only third in line for the half-back position in the New Zealand team which will make a brief internal tour in August.
