Shift, overtime rebate claims

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 15. The Minister of Finance (Mr Rowling) today gave more details of the tax rebates for overtime and shift work announced in the Budget last night.

The main features are: The overtime rebate will be 10c for every hour of paid overtime worked. The shift work rebate will be 40c for every recognised shift worked, including shift work for which no allowance is paid but which is approved by the Commissioner of Inland Revenue. Both rebates will apply from October 1 this year. Both rebates will be given by the Inland Revenue Department as end-of-year adjustments when the employee puts in a return of income. Mr Rowling said the method of granting the re-, bates should not inconvenience employers to any extent. All that employers, would have to do was to keep a record of the number of hours of paid overtime and the number of qualifying

shifts worked by each employee from October 1. This information Would then be recorded on employees’ tax deduction cer-[ [tificates to March 31, 1974, or to the date of termination of employment if this was; earlier. Arrangements for recording the extra information on tax, ideduction certificates for this; [year would be advised by the: 'inland Revenue Department before October 1. The Minister said that the Inland Revenue Department [would write to employers; ■and trade unions giving full, details as soon as the legis-l lation was passed. In the meantime, however, the Commissioner of Inland Revenue invites trade unions: :and employers to make submissions in cases where shifts are worked but no [shift allowance paid. This will; help the department to make; decisions before October 1] so that employers may know! what records to keep.
