New set-up for cycling

(From

R. M. CAIRNS)

WELLINGTON. General agreement on a change of set-up in the nature of cycling, track and road, was given at last evening’s annual meeting of the New Zealand Amateur Cycling Association. The meeting supported, although not unanimously, a proposal from Wellington to marry the track and road seasons over a continual period of nine months. It would probably remove, except on a local scale, racing in the months of June, July and August. Mr B. H. Goldworthy’s proposal was based partly on a need to fall in line with European racing and for a committee to be appointed to study the implications and report on its findings. There were few opponents

of the suggestion, but Mr T. d’ E. Cuff asked how riders would hold their fitness for a northern summer. He also (warned of a lack of numbers for the two major branches of the sport to race concurrently. A levy of $1750 will be made on clubs throughout New Zealand every season and dependent on their registrations, to go towards expenses for Olympic and [Commonwealth Games. | By the narrowest margin, [26 votes to 13 when a twothirds majority was required, [a Canterbury proposal to [ change the set-up of the jury of appeal at national championships was adopted. Until the meeting last evening, the jury consisted of three named persons; under the new scheme a convener and as many as eight others might be eligible for the jury.

The Canterbury proposal 'calls for each competing centre to nominate a person for the jury. The chairman of the council would form the jury and would not include the representative of a centre involved in any protest or appeal. After less than half an hour of discussion, the "Munich cycling officials affair” died a quiet death. The president, Mr A. A Pennington, acting on legal advice, said that any action taken at a special genera! meeting of the association would be invalid. The special meeting had been called to consider the (alleged actions of Messrs C. ;J. Hollows (the manager) and B. H. Goldsworthy (coach), at the Munich Olympic Games. After a number of motions, some of them withdrawn and none put. no action was taken.
