SITUATION AT 8 P.M. A complex area of low pressure over northern New Zealand and the area north of the Chatham Islands is moving east; a ridge of high pressure over southern New Zealand is weakening as a cold front advances east across the south Tasman Sea. FORECASTS: CANTERBURY.—Moderate variable winds, mainly north-easterly; cloudy and cold, with scattered rain, the rain more widespread north of Banks Peninsula. KAIKOURA COAST.—Easterlies, mainly fresh; rain, heavy in the ranges, but easing later today; cool. MARLBOROUGH SOUNDS.—Fresh southeast winds; rain easing during the day and fair periods developing; cool. NELSON, CENTRAL MARLBOROUGH.— South-easterly winds, mainly moderate; scattered light rain, mostly on the high country; cool. BULLER, WESTLAND.—EasterIy winds, mainly moderate; cloudy at times with scattered rain; cool. OUTLOOK.—Scattered rain developing in Westland and possibly in Canterbury, otherwise fair.
