BEECH PLANS

Pause for petitions

(N.Z, Press Association) WELLINGTON. No action would be taken on the Westland beech forest proposals until a petition before a Select Committee had been considered, said the Prime Minister (Mr Kirk). Another petition—from the Forest and Bird Society—is expected, too. Asked about the present; beech situation, Mr Kirk said the Government had a report from the National Development Council and from the Minister for the Environment (Mr Walding). A further report had also been received from the Nature Conservation Council. However, no decision would be made until the petitions were considered by the Select Committee.
