“Gallery” looks at the Enna G. dispute

It looked very much on Tuesday evening as though “Gallery” was trying very hard to emulate that memorable occasion when Dr Brian Edwards was instrumental in solving the Post Office dispute. But the tangled web of the ship Enna G. proved a much harder nut to crack. However, this is no criti* cism of the “Gallery” team for attempting to unravel the

dispute over the dismissed Fijian seamen. The role of the New Zealand Seamen’s Union, and the relationship of the pay rates of the island crew to New Zealand seamen, is a proper area for exploration, particularly in view of this country’s increasing involvement with Pacific island countries. David Exel was forced to shed some of his usual masterful role in the face of a dogmatic and militant Mr Toby Hill. However, the redoubtable Mr Willie Star needed no prodding to give his side of the story.

: If nothing else, the pro- s i gramme demonstrated clearly ; how easily industrial disputes, can get bogged down without I ( good will and a desire to : i press on with amicable dis- ] cussions on both sides. i ■ It was surprising that Mr; Exel did not pursue what i 'seemed the key to the whole , affair — the attitude of Mr - i Star’s principals. , ' And if there are good., i reasons why seamen fromL ■ any country should not be! ; paid the internationally-11 agreed minimum rates, then , we did not hear them. And j anyway, Mr Hill seemed , willing to forgo bargaining on < that point in the meantime, if t the men could be reinstated in their jobs, and the ship t could sail. t The air of confusion per- t sisted throughout. Much of it \ could have been dispelled had Mr Exel directed more ques- t tions to the mostly silent Mr ( Vincent Browne whose re- 1 sponse to a possible meeting f in the morning was merely, < “maybe.” \ I “Gallery’s” pre-Budget fore- t least told us little that we did I not already know, or could e guess for ourselves. There 1 seemed little point in having t F.O.L. president Mr Skinner, or the president of the P.S.A., Mr Rodger, and others giving; their generalised predictions on what the Budget was; likely to contain. And Miss Shanahan in Dunedin waited just as impatiently as viewers throug- s out the country for the vener- c able Professor John Williams, economist, to make some sort of comprehensible forecast for the man in the street. S “Gallery’s” handling of the t pre-Budget story underlined n . the absence of an informed f (Political lobbyist and com- t mentator who had some h ■inside information, and accu- t irate forecast. c Surely viewers can expect e ■to hear from such a commen- t Itator whose job in Parliament a j gives him insights and infer- v : mation on which to base s interesting and relevant spec- v ulation. It seems the N.Z.8.C., r with all its resources, does / not have such a man. t Ci « ij: f After the second episode in \ the new drama series, “Golumb o,” the feeling remains that next time one might well become a little t impatient with the detective L in the crumpled raincoat. ( It is not so much the char- £ acter himself that provokes t the feeling—he comes across a as a nice guy — but some of f the trite lines that the script- a writers have provided him r iwith. s And there were times in ( the story, “Death Lends a f Hand,” when the whole jig- a saw fell just too neatly into jC place. But the series is fresh g enough yet for it still to be c a change. 1 —K.C. F
