Prisoners back in custody

A police dog handler found the two missing Paparua Prison escapers shortly after 10 a.m. yesterday. A farmer in Wolfes Road, Greenpark, saw the prisoners on a bank near his farm, and telephoned the police. The men were apprehended after a short chase. The prisoners, Alistair John Barr and Larry Robert Thompson, scaled a wall to escape from the prison on Sunday. The police thought the men might be in the Tai Tapu area after food, a radio, and a knife worth more than $BO were stolen from a house on Tuesday evening. All available policemen converged on Greenpark after the farmer reported he had seen them, and Constable P. F. Kane and his dog Hari, found the men. The men had spent the nights under trees and bushes i on the Port Hills, and had not eaten since they escaped. Barr had injured his leg when he fell down a bluff.

Both appeared happy to be caught, after they had spent Tuesday night in a 7deg frost, wearing only their light prison clothing. Thompson will be charged with escaping and burglary, and Barr with escaping.
