White for Christmas

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 13. One of the more unusual cases described in the report of the Race Relations Conciliator, to Parliament was that of an advertisement for a student to play Father Christmas in a large store. The advertisement stipulated that the student be a European, thereby contravening the Race Relations Act. Sir Guy Powles, the conciliator, noted that Father Christmas was traditionally a European figure, although the part had been played quite acceptably in New Zealand by nonEuropeans. The firm, when approached, admitted the advertisement had been worded imprudently. “But it had done so because in previous years the personnel manager had wasted a lot of time interviewing Asian students with a poor command of spoken English,” Sir Guy Powles said. It was obviously more a case of oversight than intent, and no further action was taken, he said.
