SITUATION AT 8 P.M.

A deep depression over the northern Tasman Sea is moving slpwly east and a ridge of high pressure extends from east of the North Island to the south of the South Island.

FORECASTS:

CANTERBURY.—Light winds inland, moderate north-easterlies about the coast; fine, apart from increasing high cloud; moderate day temperatures. MARLBOROUGH, NELSON.—Winds freshening, mainly easterlies, but southeasterlies through Cook Strait; cloudy and scattered rain, mainly light; cool. BULLER, WESTLAND.—Moderate easterlies; mostly fine but increasing high cloud in the north; cool. OUTLOOK.—Showers about the Kaikoura coast and northern Canterbury, but mainly fair elsewhere.
