French girl’s upset win

The unseeded French girl, Miss O. de Roubin, ousted the third-seeded Miss V. Wade (Britain) to reach the women’s singles quarter-finals in the French international tennis championships yesterday.

The 21 - year - old French No. 4, from Avignon, beat the powerful Miss Wade, one of the world’s top women players, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.

The match lasted 100 minutes, and during that time Miss Wade’s play went from her very best to the worst.

“Even when I won the second set I did not believe I could beat Virginia,” Miss de Roubin said. “But she played so badly. Really, it was Virginia who lost, not I who won.” Miss Wade commented: “I hate playing bad players and she was so bad. Then the stadium was empty and there was no atmosphere, and I played so stupidly.” The American, Miss C. Evert, the second seed, confidently reached the last eight, needing less than an hour to beat, her Czech opponent, Miss R. Tomanova, 6-2, 6-3.

Also through to the quarter-finals was Miss F. Durr (France), who took even less time in beating Miss F. Bonicelli (Peru), 6-2, 6-1. In the men’s singles, Sweden’s 16-vear-old star, B. Borg, made no mistake to reach the last 16 against the

22-year-old American, R. Stockton, while the Czech, J. Kodes and the American, T. Gorman, won through to meet in the quarter-finals. Results of singles play were:—

Tomanova (Czechoslovakia), 6-2. 6-3; O. de Roubin (France) beat V. Wade (Britain), 1-6, 6-2, 6-3; F. Durr (France) beat F. Bonicelli (Peru), 6-2, 6-2; H. Masthoff (West Germany) beat P.
