Andre Previn, the American jazz pianist turned classical conductor, has established a considerable following since living in Britain, and has become known as a big admirer of British composer Vaughan Williams. When shopping in London recently, Mr Previn lost his credit cards. Soon afterwards a young man tried to buy an expensive watch on Mr Previn’s credit, and gave a passable imitation of the conductor’s signature. The jeweller, however, called a policeman. The policeman seemed happy with the signature, but asked the young man quite casually: “Was that Vaughan Williams symphony you mentioned on television last week composed before or after the First World War?” The bogus Previn could not reply. And the real Previn was delighted with the news that he was professionally recognised by the police force.
