Painting brings $600 at auction

Several paintings fetched high prices at a fine arts auction organised by McCrostie’s Fine Art Auctions, Ltd, in Christchurch on Thursday.

The top price paid for any J'of the 286 lots was $6OO, for ;a water-colour painting, “Te

ißarate —the White Terraces, ■ North Island, New Zealand,” by J. C. Hoyte, who has been described as one of the fathers of New Zealand art. An oil on canvas, “Off the Cape,” by E. O’Keeffe, sold for $3OO, and a water-colour painting by George Morland, entitled “Rustic Conversation Scene,” fetched $360. Another water-colour, by H. C. Fox, dated 1900, sold for $3OO. Five other paintings fetched between $lOO and $2BO, including a watercolour of the Christchurch Cathedral by W. A. Sutton, which sold for $125. A high price was also paid for one jewellery lot. An 18ct - gold - and - platinum mounted, five-diamond ring fetched $5OO. The highest price paid for furniture was $550, for a late Georgian mahogany pedestal sideboard. SILVERWARE A William IV sterling circular teapot, made in London in 1835, sold for $3l0 — the highest price paid for silverware. A total of 24 lots sold for $lOO or better. Although the total paid for all lots was not available, the auctioneer, Mr M. H. McCrostie, described the auction as extremely successful. It was well attended and prices were very good, he said.
