Marie Gibbins, winner of the ■ North Island Oaks last week, has 1 been invited by the Canterbury . Park Trotting Club to contest I the $5OOO mile race for fillies I and mares at its winter meeting on May 26 at Addington Racei way. The connections of the filly! were most enthusiastic about' ! the event, said the club's rac-; ' ing secretary (Mr T. H. Davis), , yesterday. The race, the first of its type in New Zealand, will be re-; stricted to 10 starters, seven of which will start from the front; 'line behind the mobile barrier. It. is one of an increasing number of races being restricted to fillies and mares in an attempt, to encourage owners to retain the best-performed of these for breeding in this country.
