Chch man to sit boxing exams
Only one Canterbury man, Mr M. V. Drury’, is among the 12 who will sit examinations for international boxing refereeing and judging certificates next week.
Two international judges, from the United States and Australia, will be the examiners. The 12 candidates, if they qualify, will be able to officiate at the 1974 Commonwealth Games and any other amateur international tournaments, including Olympics. Messrs Drury, R. Lyall (Auckland), A. Scaife (Wellington) and C. Boyd (Southland), will be sitting the tests ; for both refereeing and judging. Messrs B. F. O’Brien (Wellington), R. S. Gould (Auckland). L. Baldock (Dunedin), M. Garrett (Waimate), F. Rose and A. Harvey (Palmerston North). T. O’Connor (Dunedin), C. Whelan (Gisborne) and K. McCoombe (Southland) will sit the judging tests only.
AU candidates will have written examinations in Christchurch, as well as refereeing and judging bouts at the tournament next Monday evening. Mr S. C. Ashton, of Timaru. the only man in New Zealand to hold international refereeing and judging certificates, will be director of boxing at the 1974 Games and head of the technical committee. He will not, therefore, be refereeing or judging. He has been invited to act as referee and judge of boxing at the Oceania Games in Noumea in June, and also to officiate at the world amateur boxing championships this year. Only one man refereed more bouts than Mr Ashton at the Munich Olympics.
