Carlton Mill
intersection I Sir, —Many citizens are rightly concerned about the ; sheer volume of traffic coming into the city. While 'changes at congested intersections, e.g. Carlton Mill, ease congestion temporarily, such changes usually bring more traffic into the city, and so a new and even higher level of congestion is reached at a later stage. It is becoming increasingly clear, therefore. that the whole basis of traffic policy should be rethought. We have the chance ,not to repeat the worst mis--1 takes of overseas cities at ■the cost of millions of | dollars to ourselves. I i suggest, therefore, that top i priority be immediately I given by the city authorities] [to ways and means of reducting the volume of traffic entering the city, and simultaneously to methods of improving the public transport system. Only by going to the root of the problem can we prevent further destruction of our city environment.— Yours, etc., ; HELEN HERVEY. I March 30, 1973.
