Fishing licence fees

Sir, —I should like to support the letter by E. H. Carroll in this morning’s edition. In the 40 years I have been fishing licences have increased in price proportionately less than almost any other commodity. At $lO, the weekly cost is less than a packet of cigarettes. In fact' part of the trouble is thatj fishing in New Zealand is! so cheap that it is not valued; as it should be. Were the: money to be well used in research by competent biolo-! gists, in ranging, and to! build a fighting fund to oppose needless water abstraction and pollution, I should not oppose a $2O licence. If, in addition, an increase were to eliminate some of the fishmongers and leave the sport to anglers who understand what it is all about and wish it to be available to their sons and' grandsons, then so much the! better.—Yours, etc., W. E. ANDERSON. , March 27, 1973.
