TROTTING New Zealand trainers confident of success

(From G. K. YULE, trotting editor of “The Press') SYDNEY. Confidence in their chances in the second set of heats of the 1973 Inter-Dominion Championship series at Harold Park this evening has been expressed by most of the trainers or drivers of the New Zealand entrants.

J. W. Smolensk], the trainer-driver of Arapaho, said yesterday he was delighted with the way his horse had come through his first-night race. “He’s much brighter than before that race and I feel he has improved quite a bit. but I’m a bit worried abouti the class of the opposition. They have given him the toughest heat and he will have to be all out to beat ■ Adios Victor and Just Too. Good.” Arapaho is the horse re-. garded by most Australian observers as the toughest to beat among the visiting; horses, even though he was; beaten last Friday. There has: been some criticism of the' New South Wales Trotting 1 Club in "loading” his heat/ making it by far the strongest of the six tonight. However, others claim that this heat more than any other will end the confusion pre-' vailing among bookmakers in making an outright favourite for the Grand Final. D. D. Nyhan will drive Robalan in the heat before that of Arapaho. Described by • commentators as “The big! bird from the Shakey Isles.”' Robalan has been causing his' trainer a little concern. NOT EATING WELL “He’s just not eating as, well as I would like. With: three hard races ahead of him, you have to have everything: in your favour here and the slightest setback could make the difference of the one point necesary to get into.i the final. He’s lost quite a bit of weight and there just won’t be time to get it back on.” The Highbank owner- 1 trainer. C. J. McLaughlin, is ; confident that both Manaroa and Royal Ascot will acquit” themselves well. "Royal As- ; cot lost a fair bit of ground when avoiding a breaking horse on Friday. The effort to ( recover this told, and it wasn’t surprising that he l hung so badly on the last,, two turns.” he said. Both Manaroa and Royal 1: Ascot have thrived, said Me- . Laughlin yesterday. Manaroa. described locally as that, “equine Frankenstein.” is a ■ tremendous favourite with, Harold Park crowds and he 1 will be a short-priced favour- 1 ite in his heat. Royal Ascot ( will be at more tempting odds with Welcome Advice and Bret Armagh both expected to run him close. < Welcome Advice will be the probable favourite on the night, and deservedly so. Mr 1 R W. Minchin. who races ( him in partnership with his wife, said on Sunday at Fair-|i field that the six-year-old, | was still improving. His run was one of the more eye-J 2 catching efforts on Friday. 2 The determined manner in which he closed on Hard to 6 Get over the last 50 yards 4 was the highlight of the night. ’ DOUBLE LIKELY J. A. Carmichael is confi-’J dently expected by most ob- ! servers to win a double with J Precocious and Globe Bay, ’ which might be one of the, shortest-priced favourites of! the night. Globe Bay has lamentably ' weak opposition and should 3 he not win there will be hun- , dreds of disappointed New Zealanders on the course. s Bill Barry has come into „ calculations for the ninth heat after a dashing win at 4 the Fairfield Gymkhana on , Sunday. He led for all of the’

124 furlongs and won easily I ; after taking 3:8 for his final ] 12 furlongs, the last half-milei in 59sec. 1 He is a splendid type of pacer and might be a place chance. Another impressive j run at Fairfield was that of i the trotter, Homage, which < ; beat a field of pacers taking ‘ 13:13 for his last mile and a J half. He is a brother of Bur- 1 gundy Belle, a New South Wales representative in the ‘ pacing heats. Homage has come into 5 favour for the final trotters’ ( : heat and if he races as well 'as he did at Fairfield, he ' ' should be hard to beat. < Fields are:— 8
