Fluoridation study by C.C.C.

The City Engineer (Mr P. G. Secular) and the chief city health inspector (Mr A. P. Millthorpe) .were authorised by the Christchurch City Council last evening to report on fluoridation of the city’s water supply.

The health committee said this would enable it to have up-to-date information on the fluoride content of the city’s water, together with an estimate of the cost to add fluoride to the supply initially and annually. Cr N. F. Greenslade welcomed the decision, and said

that everything possible should be put to the committee, for and against fluoridation, so that the council could present the information to the public. After that it might be possible to debate the subject and have a free vote. Other council news in brief was:

Batchelor as chairman of the health and general committee Cr Batchelor asked to be relieved of the responsibilityi after her election to Parliament to represent Avon. Airport freezer. — Plans have been prepared for a 50,000 cubic foot freezer at the Christchurch airport. The' cost is estimated at $70,000.'

Dowell and M. McG. Clark were appointed to attend a regional development seminar in Dunedin next month. The object is to bring together key persons who Will be involved in implementing regional development policy at national, regional and local levels.

Square traffic.— Taxis will continue to be allowed to use most of the lanes of Cathedral Square which were originally limited to buses between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. They will be warned, however, against illegal movements such as the right turn from Worcester Street east.

Airport farm.— With increased wool and lamb prices the airport farm has ex-1 ceeded its estimated revenue considerably. The wool clip averaged 155 c per kilo, which was three times last year’s] orice. and lamb prices above' $8 are approximately double. The revenue from all sources is exnected to be more than ,$27,000. Dog fees.— Persons wishing to keep three or more] dogs over the age of three! months will have to apply for: a licence after March 1. The council fixed an annual fee of $5, which is in addition to, the registration fees. Sewer rats.— The council’s! rodent sewer-baiting pro-! gramme had resulted in a substantial reduction of inifestation, the health commit-’ 'tee said. Airport security.— Mr R.
