Tweedie keeps title

There were few signs that retirement was at hand when A. W. Tweedie (Old Boys) retained his Canterbury 400 metres title with a splendid run of 48.6 sec at Rugby Park on Saturday. The popular sprinter held himself in check over the first 100 metres and came through strongly at the finish for one of his most convincing wins over the distance. The performance suggests that a run of less than 48sec is well within his ability. Last week, the 25-year-old schoolmaster announced that he would retire at the end of the season, and would not be available for the Canterbury team for the New Zealand championships. Asked if he still felt the same way after this fine run, Tweedie said: “This certainly makes it much harder to retire. But 1 have made my decision.” However, he has relented slightly in regard to his decision not to run at the national championships. Afer being approached by the provincial selectors, he has agreed to run in the 4 x 400 metres relay for the province. “I was going up, anyway, to watch so this will fit in all right.” The runner-up in the 400 metres final on Saturday was T. Cochrane (Old Boys), who ran an impressive 48.9 sec in what was only his third race over the distance in the last four years. Yet another Old Boys runner, R. McIntosh was third in 49.25ec. The reigning New’ Zealand 400 metres hurdles champion, Mclntosh, missed the first day of the championships while seeking strong competition in the Norh Island. Cochrane regained the 100 metres title he had lost to his club-mate, G. Anderson, last season. In a blanket finish, he broke the tape in llsec to defeat Anderson by inches. The defending champion made a mighty lunge for the tape at the finish in a desperate effort to snatch victory, but tripped and went sprawling on the ground. Nevertheless, he was awarded second place in ll.lsec, with B. Ford (Technical) third in the same time.

The women’s 100 metres w r as won by Miss B. Peterson (Technical), aged 15, in 12sec, from a former holder of the title. Miss F. Teahen (Temuka).

The Canterbury pentathlon champion, Miss J. Gdanitz (Technical), demonstrated her versatility with wins in the 400 metres and the 100 metres hurdles and a second place in the high jump.
