The Australian formula 5000 champion, F. Matich, second to Mcßae in the overall points standings, finished fourth. Whatever the result of the last race in Adelaide next week, Matich cannot beat Mcßae’s total of 40 points. Mcßae (Mcßae-Chevrolet GMI) was beaten by Matich (Matich-Holden-Repco A5O) at the start, but the New Zealand international and American formula 5000 champion easily passed Matich on the eighteenth lap of the 52-lap 100-mile race, and drew away to a 40-second lead. The Australian lost all chance of victory when he spun on lap 22 and then ran off the track on lap 44 and dropped from second to fourth place. Second and third were the Australians, J. McCormack (Elfin-Holden-Repco MRS) and M. Stewart (LolaChevrolet T 330). Mcßae beat McCormack by one minute 32 seconds.
