Horse and pony breeders' show draws praise

“There has never » been a better line-up of iS' stallions, mares and f pony breeds in New p Zealand,” Mr T. J. e Atchinson, president of j Riding for the Disabled, | told a crowd of about o 1400 at a horse and ? pony breeders’ show at s the Addington Show s Grounds yesterday. Mr Atchinson was not alone in his use of superla- J tives. All speakers who i addressed the crowd were 2 enthusiastic about the ’ standard of the show, which j features more than 300 r horses and ponies, and which ’ it is hoped will be an annual J event in Canterbury. r Mr N. Mahon, president of ■ a committee which spent } about two years and a half 1 preparing for the show, < described the standard as ’ “amazingly high.” He wel- 1 corned breeders and exhibi- j tors from all over New Zea- 1 land, as well as two Aus- i .tralian judges, Mr R. i Richardson and Mrs L. 1 Howlett. Six rings were in use at 9 < a.m. and judging continued 1 until 12.30 p.m. After lunch, • there was a parade of 38 J registered stallions, both im- s ported and colonial-bred. • with two notable guest - horses—Fountainhead, of the 1 Morwenstow Stud, which { won $38,890 in stakes in his j racing career, and the . colonial-bred standardbred 1 stallion, Local Light, which ‘ has sired five pacers to better , 2min for one mile. 1 Most of the money from • yesterday’s show will go to , hiding for the Disabled, a > newly formed organisation ' which will provide horse rid- j ing as a therapeutic recrea- 1 tion for the disabled. The funds were boosted ; yesterday by Mr D. B. C. Allin, owner of Fountainhead. who gave the proceeds of a service by the stallion—ssoo. THOROUGHBRED HORSES (Judge: Mr D. B. C.
