Merivale-Papanui holds unbeatable lead

The leader, Merivale-Papanui, gained an outright win over Waltham in the Christchurch Suburban senior A cricket, competition on Saturday and now has an unbeatable lead. Although there are two games before the end of the season, Merivale-Papanui has already scored more points than its winning total last year. While the leader scored an easy outright on Saturday, its nearest rival, Hornby, could not dismiss Woolston Working Men’s Club for the second time and is 47 points behind Merivale-Papanui. Merivale-Papanui declared its overnight score of 200 for eight wickets and then soon had Waltham in trouble. Waltham struggled to 87 and MerivalePapanui had only six runs to make in its second innings. J. Forde and M. Willis bowled well for Merivale-Papanui, taking four

for 23 and three for 12 respectively. Hornby declared twice, but could not dismiss Woolston W.M.C. the second time. D. Reardon (27) and J. Fleming (21) topscored in Hornby’s second innings when it declared at 125 for seven wickets. Woolston W.M.C. was left 163 runs to win, but was 110 for seven wickets at the end of play. Beckenham and Heathcote both scored outrights on Saturday and have drawn away from the other teams in section B.
