Walker beats Wohlhuter
The New Zealand 800 metres champion, R. Walker (Auckland) beat the American, R. Wohlhuter, in an 800 metres international race at Wellington on Saturday.
Walker was a clear winner in a time of Imin 49.8 sec. Wohlhuter recorded Imin 50.1 sec.
The American, E. Shorter, who won the Olympic marathon at Munich, coasted to victory in the Wellington centre’s 5000 metres Rothmans sponsored championship. Shorter led from start to finish and was challenged only over the first four laps when J. Dixon (Nelson) and B. Rose (Wellington) stayed with him. Shorter then opened up a lead of 30 metres and maintained this to the tape, clocking 13min 49sec —all the more creditable for the fact that he had run most of the race on his own. Dixon was second in a personal best time of 13min 58.4 sec. Detailed results: — 800 metres Rothmans international. — J. Walker, 1:49.8. 1; R. Wohlhuter, 1:50.1, 2; E. Benton, 1:50.6. 3. 5000 metres Rothmans international and senior provincial title. —F. Shorter, 13:49, 1; J. Dixon. 13:53.4, 2; B. Rose, 14:05, 3.
