Bold gallops by Cup candidates

"The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON. There seemed little to choose among several bold gallops by Wellington Cup candidates at Trentham yesterday. Apollo Eleven, Ribaldo, Rustler, and Trelay all worked well. If anything stood out it was Apollo Eleven’s exceptional final times.

Most galloping took place about 60ft out on the course proper, where the going was hard and fast, except for a few sprints down the six-fur-long chute. The racing surface seems little affected by this week’s rain and should provide perfect going.

Apollo Eleven went 10 furlongs, but was not working hard until after he passed the five furlongs. He ran from the half-mile in 48 4-ssec—the morning’s fastest time for this distance on the course proper—and finished with three furlongs in 35 2-ssec. This was an exceptional run for a stayer and if Apollo Eleven can muster the same kind of burst in the final half of the cup he will have most of his opponents struggling. Ribaldo shattered his reputation as a poor track worker when he beat Rustler by a neck at the end of a smart mile in Imin 41 2-ssec, the last half-mile in 49 2 ssec and three furlongs in 36 l-ssec.

Trelay went nine furlongs with the Wellington Derby candidate Peg’s Pride and worked boldly into his task from the start. The mile was the morning’s second fastest at Imin 41 4-ssec. Trelay finished three-quarters of a length in front after running the final half-mile in 51 3-ssec and three furlongs in 37 l-ssec. Shifon, which will probably start favourite for the Telegraph, broke clear of Bronson from the five in the chute and increased her lead to win by six lengths n 58 l-ssec, running the last half-mile in 47sec.

Orcades. another Telegraph light-weight, went a half mile down the chute in 52sec Kir rima, which is improving, covered a mile in Imin 42 3-sscc. the last half in 51 4-ssec. Hr clashes in the Anniversary Mlle with Donny brook Fair, which ran six furlongs, the last four In 54 3-ssec and three in 39 3-sscc

On the plough Reachfar and Breathalyser completed six furlongs in Imin 18 3-ssec, the last three in 38 2-ssec. Reachfar went strongly and will parade at peak fitness for Trentham. Purdie has never worked better than he has this week and he again recorded imin 42sec for a mile, the last three in 38 1 ssec. Young Ida completed five fur longs in Imin 3 3-ssec, the last three in 37 3-ssec. She has done well this week and has a chance in the Anniversary Handicap.

Foxton The Wellington Cup chance Arcon completed his preparation for the big two-miler with pacework at Foxton yesterday morning. Although he was not asked to show his best he was none the less impressive. Running two rounds on the plough, his raceday rider. G. Phillips, allowed Arcon to Increase the tempo gradually and the gelding was striding out boldly at the finish He is fit enough for the cup and should run the distance out strongly Dalriad covered five furlongs in Imin 6 3-sscc. the first three in 37 3-ssec.
