35 bowls fours unbeaten

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. After six rounds in the national bowls fours tournament, 35 unbeaten j teams have already qualified for post-section play, which will begin tomorrow. Another 91 skips have had five wins arid after the final two rounds of section play today the number of teams for the ninth round will be considerably increased. In a tournament which has not been lacking in surprises, many of the big names in New Zealand bowls are not listed among those who have already qualified. Notable omissions are R. L. McDonald (Onehunga) and P. C. Skoglund (Northern, Manawatu). McDonald, with five wins to his credit, must win one game today to qualify for post-section play. HARDER TASK Skoglund, who has not had a happy tournament — having fallen out of the singles play and the pairs in the early rounds — must win both his matches today to qualify. Among prominent bowlers who have already made the grade are C. Simon (Hutt), P. E. Budd (Bluff Hill), J. Somerville (Matamata), W. B. MacArthur (Paritutu), A. Govorko (Te Puke), and A. M. Matheson (Miramar). C. Cole (Khandallah) who survived to the late rounds in the singles play, suffered his first loss of the fours tournament yesterday, 13-30 to the little-fancied team skipped by R. Lennox (Sandringham). HOLDER’S LOSS The title-holder. K. Tompkins (Paritutu), had four wins ' before losing to C. Nola (Ora- i tia) 23-27, in the fifth round. ■ Tompkins made sure of his fifth win when he beat R. O. fOrewa), 41-15. McDonald lost to E. J. ! Knight (Mangere), 18-19, and Smyth (Caledonian) beat i Skoglund. 23-20. i V. J. Sellars (Northern) a i former jockey, was stopped

at the post by C. Morton (Browns Bay), who scored his fourth win, 19-15, over Sellars.

MARLBOROUGH HOPES Back in 1962 R. Brown made history for the Marlborough club’when he skipped his four to victory in the rinks championships, held that year at Christchurch. Brown finished the six rounds with five wins, along with C. H. Bedwell (Mount Albert) when Bedwell beat him in the last game yesterday, 22-18. M. R. Buchan (Tui Park) went down to B. W. Grieve (Remuera) 19-23, in the second round, but in his last four games had wins of 2817, 30-13, 26-22, and 25-19. The pairs champions, R. E. Dunne and K. R. Darling (Balmacewen) have had their moment of glory—with E. W. S. Wilson as their skip, they have collected only three wins in the fours event.

From the Northland centre, I. Nicol (Dargaville) is endeavouring to emulate the reputation of J. Kosovich, and needs one more win after going down in his only loss to F. S. Mueller (Ellerslie), 22-28. HARD TASK The Wilkinson brothers (Beckenham) began well by winning their first two games, then lost, and yesterday scored two more wins. But it will be a hard row to hoe on the last two rounds as they meet H. E. Fayen (Taumarunui) in the first game. M. Lepper (Northcote) was another of the many players to lose the last game. In defeating Lepper, 34-13, J. Ell (Victoria) came up for his fifth win. Results:— Section one. — McCahon (Elmwood), Hancock (Remuera), six wins; Morris (Hamilton) five.
