Earthquake a "reminder”
(,\ Z Press Association)
WELLINGTON. Jan. 10.
The earthquake felt throughout most of New Zealand early on January 6 was a sharp reminder of the need to be prepared for a civil defence emergency, said the Minister of Civil Defence (Mr McGuigan) today. While the effects of the New Zealand earthquake were relatively mild, the disastrous earthquake which flattened the Nicaraguan capital of Managua on December 23 had been of a similar force — 6.4 on the Richter scale — and because it had a shallower base had been devastatingly destructive, Mr McGuigan said. “All reports of the January 6 earthquake available indicate that where damage occurred it was of a minor ' nature. There was no need to alert any civil defence staff ;or volunteers,” he said.
