ANOTHER CLIMB?

(N>.Z. Press Association' NEW DELHI, Dec. 10. Sir Edmund Hillary is planning to scale the hitherto unconquered Gauri Shankar peak, authoritative sources said in New Delhi on Saturday. Although it is only 23,440 feet in height, it is a formidable peak in the Rolwaling Himal Range. The British mountaineer, Eric Shipton, was the first to penetrate this area during the 1951 Everest reconnaissance. Four years later Alfred Gregory’s party mapped this region extensively and climbed a number of lesser peaks in this range. Although the Gauri Shankar peak has been attempted! by the Swiss in 1954, the Japanese in 1959 and the British in 1964, it remains, like its neighbour Menlungste, still unclimbed.
