Another Mander wins

S. Mander—whose father, P. i G. Mander, won a gold medal at the 1954 Olympic Games regatta—will represent Canterbury in the New Zealand interprovincial P class yachting championship at New Plymouth next month. However, there was little to i spare between Mander and his . closest rivals, P. Maynard. Miss M A. Stemmer and C. Roberts, : when the six-race trial senes ‘ concluded at Lyttelton on Saturday. Mander accumulated 350 ! points, Maynard finished with [346,67 after appearing the likely I winner mid-way through the final i heat; Miss Stemmer had to be .content with third and 323.34 ! points, and Roberts was another i 10 points behind. Before the last race Maynard ) held a particularly strong hand. ! His main opponent. Mander, bad ■ to head the fleet and Maynard ) had to cross the line in fourth ) or worse piace. This eventuated, I but not until after a marked •wind change. . Maynard was comfortably tn j third position on the second-iast leg when the southerly breeze died awav As the easterly wind I -ose. Mander and Roberts _ continued to lead, but Miss Stem- ; mer improved from eighth to i third to cut Maynard out of the I po'nts that he required. The other trial series /and the ■ Canterbury Finn contest, were ; completed without anv upsets in j 4 f he final placings, a’though not; leven the Olympic Games Finn 1 representative, B. G. de Thier,

was able to return an unbeaten record over the series. De Thier was strongly challenged by hiS reserve at Kiel. B, E. Treleaven. in the morning race, but finally managed to wrest the lead and beat Treleaven by ssec. In the afternoon it was quite a different story, with de Thier slipping to third, behind J. S. Wearn and H. Dimmock. The experienced partnership of D. Elder and R. May earned the right to sail for Canterbury in the Sanders Cup contest as expected. P. G Beaumont and R. D. Easmond won the fifth race when they crossed nearly 2min ahead of Elder and May. who had lost some time by having to round a buoy three times after coming into contact with the marker's rope. Beaumont and Eastmond initially held command later in the day. before giving way to C. and I. Smith on the first lead—Elder and May fell to third, but dropped this as their worst display. The top Canterbury J.C. crew for the Olympic Trophy series at Lvttelton next month will be V. Nelson and C. Wales, but it was P Lester—the South Island O.K. dinghv title-holder—and N Jackson who dominated the sec* ond day of the trial contest. Lester and Jackson won both races, by slender margins from Nelson and Wales, who were able to return a final record three wins and thr?#* seconds The fin<» ordnances on the second day lifted Lester and Nelson from fourth to be the

runners-up; the other official provincial representatives will be K. Welsh and M. Stevenson and P Hoskin and P. Raine.
