Yardley’s double road-race success

The Olympic club runner R. Yardley pulled off a notable double success at the weekend. He came first in the 17Jmile Gebbies Pass road race, held by the Canterbury Road Runners' Association yesterday after being first nominated rerepresentative runner for Canterbury home in the 25,000 metres inter-provincial road race from Rugby Park the day before. The second man in yesterday. K. E. Ragg (University), also completed both races, a performance the more meritorious since he is in the middle of a 100 mile a week build up. Canterbury's 15,000 metres veteran champion, XV. Hobbs (Olympic), was third.

| Yardley broke away from th® leading group about halfway and reached the 10-mile mark ; about a minute ahead of Ragg, to dominate the race from then on. The race was run in muggy conditions and runners were handicapped by thick fog on the Summit Road which reduced I visibility to a few yards. Results:— R. Yardley (Olympic), 1:54.17, 1; K. Ragg (University), 1:58:43, 2; W. Hobbs -Olympic). 2:5:43. 3; D. Mackley (Christchurch). 2:6:54. 4; W. Rouse (New Brighton), 2:12:19, 5; J. Perry (Christchurch), 2:17:0, 6: A. Jemmett (St Martins). 2:22:04, 7: J. Smithers (Technical), 2:39:08, 8
