OBITUARY Mr E. Paul

Mr Edward Paul, one of New Zealand’s most respected and authoritative trotting journalists, died suddenly in Christchurch yesterday, aged 65. Mr Paul came from a racing family. His father, the late George Paul, was a wellknown trainer in the Auckland district. Among the high-class gallopers he prepared was Aussie and the dual Auckland Cup winner, Te Kara But Mr Edward Paul’s main interest was in trotting. As a young man he held an amateur licence and rode and drove trotters with a fair measure of success. He began his journalistic career as a trotting writer for the “Christchurch Sun.” When that newspaper was taken over by the “Christchurch Star” in the mid--19305 he joined the staff of “Truth.” Except for a period of military service with the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force in the Middle East and Italy during World War 11, he remained with ‘Truth” as trotting editor, until his retirement in 1967. While still employed by “Truth” Mr Paul also served the Trotting Conference as chief handicapper from 1954 until 1957. He is survived by his wife, three married daughters and a son.
